Water colour, also aquarelle, is a painting method in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a water-based solution. Water colour refers to both the medium and the resulting artwork.
Here’s a step by step process into creating a water colour portrait. Lets begin.
Step 1
The first step is to prepare the sketch. Watercolour is a transparent medium, mistakes in a layer can be seen upwards, so accurate sketching can help minimize mistakes. Adding the highlights and shadows to the pencil sketch itself can simplify later work.
Step 2
The painting has to be completed in several layers. The initial layers should be of lighter colours and the higher you go, the darker shades/ colours can be used.
The first thing to do in painting is to apply a full layer using the lightest colour. If you are using a reference image, the lightest colour from each part can be selected for the first layer.
Step 3
Next, we can apply darker shades to the areas that are were the shadow falls.
Step 4
Human skin has many tones, so try to use different colour shades in areas where there is a colour difference.
When painting clothes, darker colours should be used on the creased areas where the shadows fall.
Step 5
Finally, the finishing, final work can be done using the darkest colours.
Artwork is ultimately an expression of the artist’s ideas. So one can experiment with colours without depending entirely on a reference image.
